According to the report:

“Based on recent developments, it appears that the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s office is pursuing an indictment on the basis of sharing login credentials between users’ Facebook accounts,” a Senate Commerce Committee aide told the Senate panel on Wednesday. “It is clear that whether or not Facebook intends to indict Zuckerberg, a congressional subpoena is a more effective way to get relevant information on the company’s practices than waiting around to be indicted.” The aide added that the attorney general of Connecticut is “committed to a thorough investigation that seeks justice, which may be more effect on Facebook than the federal indictment.”

Facebook made it clear earlier this month that it is not prepared to testify before Congress about its data practices until the U.S. Department of Justice issues additional findings of wrongdoing. Federal law enforcement has until April 21 to bring criminal charges against the company.

While Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify in front of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Nov. 19, the Senate Commerce Committee is not scheduled to hear from him until at least Dec. 11, according to Senate staffer.

Facebook is now playing catch up to a number of other tech giants that are already under investigation for wrongdoing, and an indictment is unlikely to occur until well after the presidential election in November of next year.

While Zuckerberg and Facebook have taken steps to compensate users who had their Facebook data harvested and sold by Cambridge Analytica for political purposes, no individual has been charged.
