NEW YORK — The U.S. Army will open all jobs to women in combat-style units by 2016, the Pentagon’s top officer announced Wednesday.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno told reporters that by January 2015, women will be fully integrated into combat units.
The change comes after a study by the Army’s top officer concluded that sexual assaults and other misconduct can be reduced by allowing women into all-male units.
“We have a lot of work to do yet but I see this as the right step forward,” Odierno said, speaking at the New America Foundation, a think tank in Washington, D.C.
The decision to open the combat positions to women “doesn’t negate the need for standards to be followed,” said Odierno, who, along with the two other uniformed service chiefs, also told reporters that they support repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the military’s ban on openly gay troops.
The generals’ announcement was welcomed by Rep. Niki Tsongas of Massachusetts and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, both of whom have pushed for changes in the military.
On Tuesday, the House Military Affairs Committee approved an amendment to overturn the ban on openly gay members of the military. Its sponsor, Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., said it was the first time Congress had voted to repeal a law enacted by Congress.
Gillibrand said the chiefs’ announcement showed that the debate over sexual misconduct in the military had “changed for the better.”
She said the change made it “absolutely imperative” that Congress repeal the law that bars gays from military service.
Frank also said he supported the move to open all jobs to women.
As for the assault problem in the military, he said the move to allow women into the combat ranks “is welcome and much needed.”
Tsongas said the chiefs’ announcement was “a powerful statement to the world” and was a “step in the right direction.”
