A woman who stopped to ask an elderly man if he needed help in Sydney’s north has revealed how she found a sealed parcel of more than £200,000 worth of stolen jewellery in his back garden.
Ken Jones and his wife Helen had no idea that a gang of burglars had broken into their home in the main street of Wagga Wagga, on the NSW mid-north coast, to steal their valuables.
But on returning home, they found a blue bag waiting for them at the back of the garden and found themselves wondering how it came to be there.
“We went in the back there and we started thinking what had happened, how it got here,” Mrs Jones said.
“It came to my mind that somebody must have dropped it while breaking in. There was a note [from the burglars] that said we’re sorry we didn’t call but it was too late.”
Mrs Jones said she then found three bags inside the rubbish bin, which would normally have been thrown away.
“I just started to play with the contents and realised, ‘Oh my goodness there’s real cash here’,” she said.
They then found jewellery, watches and other valuables worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“We had only moved in a year ago and we were thinking about what we were going to do with it – it’s been a bit of a hard slog in the first year,” Mr Jones said.
“We had to find a good place to store it and keep it safe. Once we got this it’s like it’s never been before.”
After posting a letter online with details of the burglary, the couple were contacted by a reporter who told them about the burglary at their home.
Since then, Mrs Jones has made a film called The Secret Stash about her find.
