Biblia De Estudio ArcoirisThe Church of St Mark in Sussex is set to be deconsecrated after 130 years, it has been revealed.

A group of parishioners has launched legal proceedings to have the Protestant Church of England church in Seaford, East Sussex, closed.

The campaigners believe the building should be transformed into a home for the community of Seaford.

Members of a group called Sussex People’s Movement, including former Strict Baptist members, say the church is now redundant and a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Claire Spiller, of the group, said: “We’re saying closure by default is a short-sighted solution. We have a lot of churches that aren’t being used by anyone, and Sussex People’s Movement is a movement of people who want to develop community and action through churches.

“The church is obsolete, unlike so much of the stuff we see in church these days – it’s a replica of a lost church. Its time has gone. We’re asking what’s next? There’s so many churches in Sussex that are just standing empty.

“We’ve got a lot of different denominations in Sussex, and most of them have been funded and organised by the state – the Anglican Church, for example, is state-sponsored.

“We want to take the building back and use it for meetings, and create a community space for the whole of Seaford.

“It’s never going to go back to being a house of God.”

The campaigners are hoping to raise £20,000 to fund the project, with support from many supporters. They are in the early stages of the legal process to take the building to a heritage trust.

Laurie Ratchford-Taylor, a building management manager at Sussex Heritage Trust, said: “You don’t have to be religious to go to church.

“When churches are empty, they can often be more expensive to maintain than to let go. When they shut, the buildings become derelict, and they can
